Troubleshooting Guide: How to Fix the HL Error Code on Your Wave Spa
The HL error code stands for "High Limit" and is a fail function to protect the heater from damage. The good news is that it’s often something you can resolve yourself with a few simple steps to reset the system.
This guide will walk you through exactly what to do to clear the code and get back to enjoying your spa.
The Most Common Cause
First, let's talk about prevention. The HL code most often appears when the spa is unplugged or switched off at the socket while the heating function is still active.
To prevent this, please make sure you always press the heating button to stop the cycle before turning the spa off at the mains or unplugging it.
How to Clear the HL Code: A Step-by-Step Guide
Let's try a system reset. Please follow these steps in order:
- Turn off the Spa using the controller and then unplug it completely from your power socket.
- Locate your filter housing. Unscrew the filter cartridge (newer models have two, older models have one).
- Behind the filter, you will find a hair guard. Remove this.
- Clean the hair guard thoroughly and put it back in place.
- For now, leave the filter cartridge(s) off.
- Wait 10 minutes. This allows the system to fully reset.
- Plug the spa back in and turn it on.
- Press the RESET button on the RCD (the large plug).
Now, look at your controller. One of two things will happen.
Scenario 1: The HL Code Does Not Appear
This is great news! Your spa just needed a quick reset.
- Press the Filter button only (do not press the heat button).
- Let the filter run by itself for 15 minutes.
- After 15 minutes, screw your clean filter cartridge(s) back on.
- Your spa should now be ready to heat. You can press the heater button and enjoy!
Scenario 2: The HL Code Does Appear Again
Don't worry, this just means we have one more stage to complete.
- Press and hold the Filter button until the filter pump starts. You may need to press it a few times.
- The HL code will continue to flash while the filter is running. This is normal.
- Allow the filter to run. The HL code should clear by itself. This process can take up to 30 minutes, so please be patient.
- Once the code is gone, place the filter cartridge(s) back on.
- Let the filter run for another 30 minutes.
- After this, you should be able to start heating your spa!
