It needs to be flat, level and firm enough to take the weight when full. Decking rated for the load, a concrete patio or a prepared base all work. Soft or uneven lawn is not suitable on its own, though a ground sheet and an insulating mat make it workable.

For a portable tub on an existing surface you normally do not, because it is not a permanent structure. Check with your local authority if you plan to build an enclosure around it, or if you live in a listed building or a conservation area.

Drain the tub and clean the waterline with a non abrasive spa cleaner or an oil absorbing sponge while the surface is still damp. Waterline marks are usually body oils and lotions rather than permanent staining. Rinse thoroughly before refilling.

The foam and aluminium frame models are built for it, and every Wave spa includes FrostFree anti freeze protection so it stays ready even on the coldest nights. Inflatables can stay out too, but most owners find it easier to drain and store them over the coldest months.

Tub footprints run from 155cm to 208cm / 61in to 82in across. Adding at least 100cm / 39in of clearance on each side brings the total to roughly four metres square for the larger models.
