What does the HL error code mean?

The HL error code indicates that the spa has detected a high temperature issue within the heating system.

This is a built-in safety feature designed to protect your spa's heater and internal components from damage caused by overheating. When the water or heating element reaches an unsafe temperature, the spa automatically shuts down heating and displays the HL code to alert you.

We know this can be frustrating, but in most cases it can be cleared by following the steps below.

Most common cause

The HL error code is most commonly triggered when the spa is unplugged from the power socket while it is still heating.

Important tip for the future

Always turn off the heating first using the control panel before switching the spa off at the socket.
Avoid unplugging the spa while it is actively heating.

Other possible causes

While unplugging during heating is the most frequent trigger, the HL code can also appear due to:

  • Blocked or dirty filters — Clogged filters restrict water flow, causing the heater to overheat. Regular filter cleaning is essential.

  • Low water level — If the water level drops too low, the heater may not be fully submerged, leading to overheating. Always ensure the water is filled to the recommended level.

  • High ambient temperature — On very hot days, the water temperature may rise naturally, causing the safety sensor to trigger.

  • Spa set to maximum temperature — Running the spa at its highest temperature setting for extended periods can occasionally trigger the HL code.

  • Faulty temperature sensor — In rare cases, a malfunctioning sensor may incorrectly detect high temperatures. If the code persists after following all steps, this may be the cause.

How to clear the HL error code

Please follow the steps below carefully and in order.

Step 1: Power off and prepare

  1. Turn the heater and the filter off at the controller and wait 5 minutes — do not unplug for at least 5 minutes.

  2. Unplug the spa completely from the power socket.

  3. Unscrew the filter(s):

    • Newer spas have two filters

    • Older models have one filter

  4. Remove the hair guards from the filters.

Step 2: Clean and reset

  1. Clean the hair guards thoroughly.

  2. Reattach the hair guards.

  3. Leave the filters off for now.

  4. Wait 30 minutes.

  5. Plug the spa back in.

  6. Turn the spa on.

  7. Press the RESET button on the RCD.

What happens next?

If the HL code does NOT appear

  1. Run Filter Only (no heating) for 30 minutes.

  2. Turn the spa off.

  3. Reattach the filter(s).

  4. Turn the spa back on.

  5. You can now start heating your spa.

If the HL code DOES appear

  1. Press and hold the Filter button until the filter starts running (you may need to do this a few times).

  2. The HL code will continue flashing — this is normal.

  3. Leave the spa running for up to 30 minutes.

  4. Turn the spa off.

  5. Reattach the filter(s).

  6. Turn the spa back on and run the filter for another 30 minutes.

  7. You can now start heating your spa.

How to prevent the HL error code in future

A few simple habits can help you avoid seeing the HL code again:

  • Always turn off heating before unplugging — Use the control panel to switch off the heater, wait a few minutes, then unplug at the socket.

  • Clean your filters regularly — We recommend rinsing filters every 1–2 weeks and replacing them every 3–6 months depending on usage.

  • Check the water level before each use — Ensure the water is filled to the recommended level marked on your spa.

  • Avoid running the spa at maximum temperature for extended periods — Give the heater a rest by setting a slightly lower temperature during long sessions.

  • Keep the spa in a shaded area during hot weather — Direct sunlight can raise water temperature significantly, especially in summer.

  • Use the spa cover when not in use — This helps maintain a stable water temperature and reduces the workload on the heater.

Frequently asked questions

Is the HL error code dangerous?

No — the HL code is a safety feature, not a sign of serious damage. It means the spa has detected a high temperature and has paused heating to protect itself. In most cases, following the reset steps above will resolve it quickly.

How long does it take to clear the HL code?

The full reset process typically takes around 30–60 minutes, including the cool-down and filter-off waiting period. Please be patient and follow each step in order for the best results.

Can I use the spa jets while the HL code is showing?

We recommend not using the spa until the HL code has been cleared. Running the jets while the heater is in a fault state could prolong the issue.

Will the HL code clear itself?

Sometimes the code may clear on its own after the spa has cooled down, but we recommend following the full reset procedure to ensure the issue is properly resolved and to prevent it from recurring.

How often should I clean my filters?

We recommend rinsing your filters with clean water every 1–2 weeks. A deep clean with a filter cleaning solution should be done monthly. Filters should be replaced every 3–6 months depending on how frequently you use your spa.

Still seeing the HL code?

No worries — we're here to help.

If the HL error code is still showing after completing all the steps above, please use the chat widget at the bottom of the page and send us the following so we can assist you quickly:

  • Proof of purchase or order reference number

  • A photo of the batch code on your spa (located at the bottom-right of the warning/safety panel, e.g. "07 24")

  • A photo showing the entire spa

  • A photo of the controller displaying the HL code

  • A photo of the power outlet the spa is plugged into

  • A photo of both filter areas

It is important to send the above in one message so that we can start the warranty process. This may include repair or replacement of the heater.
