What you might notice

  • Loud rattling noise

  • Filter not running

  • Filter switches on, then turns itself off again after a few seconds

  • Weak water circulation

Step-by-step solution

  1. Turn off and unplug the spa.

  2. Check the water level — top up if low.

  3. Remove the filter cartridge.

  4. Inspect for dirt, debris, or collapse.

  5. Replace the filter if dirty or damaged.

  6. Reinstall securely and restart the spa.

Filter switches on, then off again after a few seconds?

This usually means the spa isn't getting enough water flow through the heater, so it stops the filter to protect itself. Work through these checks:

  1. Water level: make sure the water is between the MIN and MAX lines.

  2. Filter and hair stopper: remove the filter cartridge(s), rinse them, and clean the hair stopper(s). Replace the cartridge if it's old or heavily soiled.

  3. Filter fitted too tight: refit the filter hand-tight only. A filter screwed on too tightly can stop the filtering system working.

  4. Test without the filter: with the water above the MIN line, briefly run Filter only with the cartridge removed. If it now runs normally, the cartridge was restricting flow — clean or replace it.

  5. Debris or limescale in the pipes: use the boiling water method below, or turn the spa off at the mains, remove the filter and run clean water from a garden hose through the inlet and outlet.

  6. Error code: if a code such as SL or HL shows on the display, see our Error Codes guide.

If the filter still switches itself off, please contact us using the chatbot at the bottom of this page with a short video of the controller when it happens.

Extra tips

  • Filters should be cleaned regularly and replaced as recommended

  • Avoid placing the spa in direct sunlight, which can affect performance

  • You may need to pour boiling water to free up debris stuck in the pipes. Please do this with water already in the spa at least to the min line level. Then pour it near the filter inlet closest the heater and allow it to pull through. If this reduces noise, you can repeat a few times to get it running smooth

Filter maintenance schedule

Keeping to a regular maintenance routine will extend the life of your filter and keep your spa running quietly and efficiently.

  • Every 1–2 weeks: Rinse the filter cartridge with a garden hose to remove surface debris and body oils.
  • Every 4–6 weeks: Soak the filter overnight in a dedicated filter cleaning solution to break down mineral deposits and grease.
  • Every 2–4 weeks (closer to 2 weeks with daily use): Replace the filter cartridge entirely. A worn filter cannot be fully cleaned and will restrict flow.
  • Always: Keep a spare filter cartridge on hand so you can swap it in immediately if the current one needs replacing.

Understanding the noises — what they mean

Not all noises are the same. Here's a quick guide to help you identify what you're hearing:

  • Rattling or vibrating: Usually caused by debris caught in the impeller or a loose filter housing. Follow the boiling water method and check the filter is seated correctly.
  • Gurgling or air bubbling: Often a sign of low water level or air trapped in the pump. Top up the water and run the filter for a few minutes to purge the air.
  • High-pitched whining: Can indicate a partially blocked filter or a pump that is working too hard. Clean or replace the filter first.
  • Complete silence (no operation): Check the power connection, ensure the spa is not in sleep/economy mode, and verify the water level is above the minimum line.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I replace my Wave Spa filter?
We recommend replacing the filter cartridge every 2–4 weeks depending on usage. If you use your spa daily, replace it closer to every 2 weeks, or sooner if you notice a drop in water flow.

Can I run my spa without a filter?
No — never run your spa without a filter installed for normal use. The filter protects the pump from debris and keeps the water clean. Running without one can damage the pump and void your warranty. (A brief test run with the filter out, as described above, is fine for diagnosing flow problems.)

The boiling water method didn't fix the noise — what next?
If the rattling persists after repeating the boiling water flush 2–3 times, the impeller inside the pump may have debris lodged in it that cannot be dislodged this way. Please use the chatbot at the bottom of this page to get in touch with our support team.

My filter looks clean but water flow is still weak — why?
Even a visually clean filter can be clogged with microscopic mineral deposits and body oils that restrict flow. Try soaking it overnight in filter cleaning solution. If flow doesn't improve, replace the cartridge.

Where can I buy replacement filters?
Genuine Wave Spa replacement filters are available directly on our website. Using genuine parts ensures the best fit and performance for your spa.
