Want a spa day at home without the price tag? Autumn is the perfect time to host one. Start with an afternoon of pure downtime, let it stretch into a crisp evening, and sink into 40°C bubbling water right outside your back door.
Whether it's a hot tub party with friends or a quiet solo pamper night, here's how to set it up in three easy steps.
1. Set the Scene
Start with the lighting. Swap harsh patio spotlights for festoon lights and a few battery lanterns, then add a floating LED light for a soft glow across the water. Keep mains electrics well away from the tub and stick to solar or battery-powered lights.
Next, add scent. A scoop of spa aromatherapy crystals, like calming Lavender Night, turns the rising steam into instant wind-down mode. Never use household essential oils or bath oils, as they can damage your hot tub's filter and liner.
Finally, set up a comfort station by the back door with thick robes and slides, so nobody dashes barefoot across cold patio slabs.
2. Pamper in the Tub
Once you're in, pop on those sheet face masks. Clay masks melt into the water, but sheet masks stay put while the warm, humid air helps the serum absorb. Twist your hair up in a towel with a conditioning mask underneath and let the heat do the work.
Keep nibbles simple and crumb-free: grapes, fruit skewers, almonds and squares of dark chocolate. Soaking dehydrates you, so have plenty of chilled water infused with cucumber and mint, and serve everything in shatterproof acrylic glasses. Add a waterproof speaker with a mellow playlist at a neighbour-friendly volume, and you're set.
3. Stay Warm After Your Soak
Stepping out into a chilly autumn breeze is the hardest part of cooler-weather dips. Keep the chill away by sipping a warm mug of hot chocolate or herbal tea tub-side as the sun goes down and the steam rises.
When you're ready to climb out, use this trick: 15 minutes before you finish, pop your towels and robes in the tumble dryer, then seal them in an insulated cool box by the tub. Cool boxes hold heat just as well as cold, meaning toasty, cloud-soft layers are waiting the moment you step out onto the patio.
The Best Is Yet to Come
Your garden doesn't need to hibernate this autumn. With warm water, soft lighting and good company, an October evening outside could become your favourite night of the week.
