What Does the SL Error Code Mean?

The SL error code (sometimes displayed as SLO or SL0) stands for Slow Flow or Suction Lock. It indicates that your spa's circulation system has detected insufficient water flow through the heater. As a safety measure, the heater automatically shuts off to prevent damage — which is why your spa may feel cold or stop heating.

Common Causes of the SL Error Code

• Blocked or dirty filter — The most frequent cause. A clogged filter restricts water flow, triggering the SL code.
• Low water temperature — In cold weather, the water or pipework can become too cold, causing the flow sensor to stall.
• Frozen or partially frozen pipes — In winter, water in the outlet or pipework can freeze, blocking circulation.
• Incorrectly fitted filter — If the filter isn't screwed in properly, it can create a blockage at the outlet.
• Air lock in the pump — Air trapped in the system can prevent water from circulating freely.

How to Fix the SL Error Code — Step by Step

Step 1: Check and Clean Your Filter

Start here, as a dirty or blocked filter is the most common culprit.

1. Turn off your spa and remove the filter cartridge.
2. Rinse the filter thoroughly under a hose or tap, working from the inside out to dislodge debris.
3. Inspect the filter for damage — if it looks worn, torn, or heavily discoloured, replace it with a new one.
4. Check the filter housing and outlet for any debris or blockages and clear them.
5. Refit the filter, making sure it is screwed in firmly and seated correctly.
6. Power the spa back on and check whether the SL code has cleared.

Step 2: Warm Up the Water (Cold Weather Fix)

If your spa has been sitting in cold temperatures, the water or internal pipework may be too cold for the flow sensor to register correctly.

1. Carefully pour warm or boiling water directly into the spa, near the upper filter outlet.
2. This helps warm the pipes and loosen any cold-related blockages.
3. Repeat 2–3 times if needed, allowing a minute between each pour.
